What Happens When You Remove Fat And Sugar From Ice Cream

January 31, 2012   38 Comments

Does anyone else think the image of a skinny cow is a little strange? My kids thought the packaging was hilarious.

Skinny Cow Ice Cream Healthy

What is up with that cow? I guess she is living the "skinny dream" that the rest of us will live if we eat Skinny Cow products. In case you didn't know, the Skinny Cow Brand makes low fat and sugar free ice cream.

I was first introduced to Skinny Cow when I joined Weight Watchers in 2005 to lose the baby weight. These sandwiches solved a really big problem that I had with ice cream. My favorite ice cream was Ben & Jerrys and now I could satisfy my craving (and not eat 1/2 pint of Cherry Garcia) with a Skinny Cow ice cream sandwich.

These sandwiches are great because they are portion controlled, low in calorie, and taste a lot like ice cream. Here are the nutritional facts:

One sandwich is 140 calories, 2.0 g fat, 29 g carbohydrates, 4.0 g protein, 4.0 g fiber, 120 mg sodium, 4 Points+

The dark side of Skinny Cow is that when you remove fat and sugar from ice cream you have to replace it with SOMETHING.

Check out the ingredients list:

Don't you love that line about a "laxative effect"? Makes you wonder what other kinds of effects this sandwich will have.

What you get of course is a chemical cocktail that AMAZINGLY mimics the flavor, texture, and sweetness of ice cream. And, while I usually would say AVOID such a product with its sorbitol and sucralose - if you have a problem with ice cream and need to lose some weight - these can be handy.

I stopped eating them at one point because I got my ice cream habit under control. Somehow, eating less ice cream led to wanting less ice cream. Now I find that I can eat a small portion of delicious ice cream and forget the rest of the pint is in the freezer.

(yes, there are 2 pints in my freezer right now and I'm not thinking about them :)

In my travels, I have found two alternatives to Skinny Cow that taste better, have fewer calories, and much cleaner ingredient lists.

Both So Delicious Coconut Minis and Haagen Dazs portioned sorbets and frozen yogurts are delicious and there is no sucralose or sorbital to be found. Read my posts on them below.

Do you eat Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches?

Thank for highlighting that although a food may be very exciting and low in calorie it can be filled with chemicals. I say stick with whole organic foods. read your labels.

I say if you are worried about all the baddies in ANY ice cream(vegan, or no) make your own. I made some in my high school chemistry class, so it's really not difficult at all.

You can use whatever sort of milks you want and tis a lot of effort making it, so making more will turn you off xD

In the end, REAL food and ingrediants are far better for your body than all the man made stuff to cut out fat, calories, and sugar. All that stuff is essentially toxic to our bodies and we don't process and break it down properly. Hence the ever rising issues with cancer as growths are often caused by toxins we are putting in our body. So do I eat skinny cow? Absolutely not! I will take a full sugar full fat ice cream in moderation. Moderation and portion control is key. People need to stop substituting fake for real and just learn how to eat healthy and in moderation.

I hear you! The last time I was at the grocery store, I went to pick up some Skinny Cow sandwiches as I ate them when I was losing weight. I took a quick glance at the ingredients list (not just the nutrition facts like I used to) and promptly put them back. Was disappointed to see a snack I used to like be so full of junk.

I'm going to look for those coconut milk ones...look promising!

I used to eat these some times & think well it's better than real ice cream, right? but turns out I'm gluten intolerant, so for me it was 10X worse than just real ice cream. my new motto, real food, real results. (they do taste pretty good) but like you said, they have to replace the real food (cream & sugar) w/something else & it's chemicals & by-products. if you read the ingredients, gross.

Skinny cow ice creams are not sugar free, they are no sugar added. Now, saying that, I will say that the sandwiches are delicious. The mini cups are a nice treat when you want a sundae feel to your treat. And I never had a laxative effect take place after eating them.

Some foods are supposed to have fat. Even if you aren't dieting, you shouldn't eat ice cream with any kind of frequency. I like how you delt with your ice cream problem. The same thing worked for me and soda years ago. Other than enjoying the occasional Mexican glass bottle Coke, I don't really touch it. It is a treat. Cherry Garcia is delicious too. Maybe too delicious...

Talk about a timely article. I just bought these this WEEK! I only looked at the calories, not the ingredients. DUH! Thanks, I will try the coconut mini's next time. Love your articles!! Keep it up!

I've been telling people for years that Skinny Cow is not 'all that'. Just yesterday I mentioned it to someone and pulled random scary things out of the ingredient list. I personally find it disgustingly sweet.

Great post. I love Skinny Cow, but not the chemicals! I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on Arctic Zero ice cream "substitute", I absolutely love them but don't know if I should be concerned about the ingredients list!

There's not a single Real Food ingredient in the whole list.

@Kailey - I cannot get my hands on Arctic Zero without buying a CASE. I am working on it.

What is Maltodextrin? Is it bad for you? I've seen it in a lot of "healthy" food items.

The So Delicious coconut ice creams are really delicious!

It's a perfect treat. I eat tem all the time on my diet.

I bought my boyfriend an ice cream maker last year for his birthday. It's absolutely amazing the great ice cream and sorbet he can create! Not all of them are healthy, of course, but it's nice to know that only simple ingredients were included instead of a bunch of chemicals. I'm making it my goal to make some of the best recipes more healthy, including my favorites: strawberry sorbet and peppermint ice cream.

I used to reward myself with a Skinny Cow ice cream sandwich at the end of a "good" WW day if I had 2 points left. I don't eat them much anymore. I found a good ice cream (albeit a tad pricey) in Coconut Bliss...

Or try giving a frozen banana a whirl in a food processor, you can add a little cocoa powder or some PB2 - I couldn't believe how yummy that was/is!

I live in Columbus, Ohio and here we have a magical place called Jeni's splended ice creams. Made with local REAL ingredients (including milk! Local milk! Good gravy!) and some amazing ice cream know how these are by far my favorite treat. I love Ben and Jerry's too, but it's easier to stay away when I know I can wait and have the most amazing ice cream experience in the whole world.

Definitely worth the milkfat.

when i lived in mexico ice cream was too expensive to have for our 5 person family. fresh fruits and veggies were a lot cheapper. i understand that may not be the same here in the states (or wherever you are) but this is what i want to share: my mom would blend banana + other fruits if we had them + milk and blend it a lot. then she would freeze it and call it ice cream.

really, it wasn't exactly like ice cream but we had no other options. ice cream was too expensive at $3/gallon for us. so this was sweet, cooled you off in summer time, and was pretty creamy/fruity/sugary.

maybe you want a creamy treat and not exactly ice cream. or you may want to alternate (like she did with cereal: buy lots of the cheap cereal and one box of frosted flakes and mix them so we still get a bit of frosted flakes while eating the cheap cereal).

i know lots of this was done out of need and poverty but when i look at it with nutrition education i can tell it was VERY healthy and it did satify the sweet tooth.

also, "hielitos de leche"! look it up! amazing treat, doubt it has nearly as many calories/fat/sugar as ice cream!

you may not have to swear off ice cream at all but just eat less while eating more treats that are less taxing on our health :) <3

I haven't eaten Skinny Cow stuff and personally I dislike ice cream sandwiches! For my ice cream cravings I do the frozen yogurts which still have some not great ingredients but not as much. I didn't even know So Delicious and Haagen Daz had minis. I usually try to just dart in and out of the ice cream aisle, otherwise I'm terribly tempted. I love HD so I'll have to seek those out!

I used to like this brand too until I really read the label.

Now I make my own using frozen bananas and frozen fruit and almond milk (add cocoa powder for chocolate versions). Very creamy and delicious using my Ninja or Vitamix. It makes a soft serve, but you can freeze it to make it thicker. Nothing in there but good stuff! :)

That poor cow looks sick from her chemical cocktail.

Those ingredients are awful. I much rather have a smaller portion of real organic ice cream once in a while for a treat, but if you want something both nutritious and delicious that you can eat on a regular basis,

check out my recipe which takes seconds to make.

Thanks for the post

Dawn

That is a funny cow, kids. Now, it reminds me of the Jack Nicholson movie, Five Easy Pieces, where he wants a side of toast and can't get it so he orders a chicken sandwich and tells them to hold the lettuce and mayo...then says to the waitress..."got that? OK Now hold the chicken"...so for all those fans, hold the sugar and fat, now, got that? ok hold the milk...I crack myself up

I'm a big fan of So Delicious Coconut Milk Ice cream. I will have to give the mini sandwiches a try. And I also have a pint sitting in my freezer that I'm not thinking about right now. :)

Maltodextrin is a soluble fiber... it's similar to the stuff in Benefiber. I always laugh about the "may have a laxative effect" claims... probably if you already have an issue with being prone to go. I've tried various of those products thinking they were better and more tasty than taking a lot of bran in or psyllium when a little blocked--doesn't really work for me. Bottom line with chemicals--remember that your beliefs are more important than what's actually in there--if you think it's unhealthy it will be for you. You do have to take a probiotic if you like sucralose--because the digestive system doesn't absorb it (which is why it doesn't have calories), it goes intact through the colon and doesn't feed the bacteria like real sugar would--so you have to take probiotics or you'll have less gut bacteria than you need...

Great post! I can't stand products on the market like this..drives me nuts! Stick to homemade food as much as possible and if you want ice cream get the real stuff without all those added ingredients. You'll be better off. When I was working on losing baby weight from my son a littler over a year ago I splurged here and there on full fat ice cream and still lost weight. To me the ingredients of a product are most important not the calories, fat, carbs etc.

All the sugar alcohols can cause a laxative effect. So people who eat a lot of sugar substitutes might experience this! They tend to be the words ending in "-tol" Sorbitol, Xylitol, Maltitol, etc.

ahhh I never did read the wrap on skinny cow. UGH I like the chocolate vanilla icecream sandwiches ugh.. even though I can portion control my blueberry cheese cake Haagan daz ahhhh shouldnt have read the write up lol just kidding

I just want to clarify that ANY ice cream can have a laxative effect. Both my Dad and me have a sensitivity to ice cream products , especially late at night.Frozen Yogurt is healthy and has fewer calories and fat. I don't know if you have this brand where you are but here in Canada I love Chapman's natural frozen yogurt which has many fewer calories than it's ice cream. One of my favourite and the lowest count is Cappuccino (the BEST) at 100 calories/1/2 cup.

Finally someone says that Skinny Cow brand is crap! Thank you. The ingredients are horrible. I'm with you on the So delicious brand and Arctic Zero is another brand to look at.

I used to love them, but now I don't think I'll eat them any more. I'll stick to natural sorbets, which taste better anyway.

I love ice cream, too, and it doesn't seem to effect my wt. loss goals as much as cookies and candy and such. No sugar added vanilla type choices satisfy my cravings, but like you, whenever the going gets tough, I avoid the aisle like the plague. Out of sight, out of mind, you might say.

Skinny Cow has a rewards site! I earn around $50 a month using it! The activities are all very easy, some only even require you to click a button! You can earn all kinds of rewards such as jackets, coupons, giftcards, umbrellas, and bags. I highly suggest checking this site out. Use my link to get a sign up bonus!

skinny cow may have good products but alot of people will never visit their site again, or but their products. they have scammed and ripped people off in a promotion they are running. they changed their rules daily to suit themselves when people redeemed points they earned on there promo page. If you redeemed for a gift card then were buildig your points again for another, you have had you acct turned off and your card you redeemed (mine was redeemed 2 weeksa go and got nothing yet) is now gone along with all the points you had rebuilt. so many people are heartbroken over this mess we all worked hard, daily to get all these points just to have accusations of cheating thrown in out faces now. I am sorry should say it as they did "suspicious activity" I am going to let as many people as I can know about this and try to get them all to boycott this company as they need done for scamming thousands of people!!!!!!

Talk about laxative effect! Skinny cow truffles worked like the laxative they have you take before a colonoscopy. No thanks

These ice cream sandwiches made me ill with diarhea

, sick to my stomach and also stomach pain. I'll never eat them again. They should be banned from the grocery stores,

Almond cupcake was very sweet and good. I asked the 2 young ladies for a cup of water and was told I could use the water fountain or buy a bottle. I was fine with the water fountain until I discovered it was not working. I told them the water was only coming out of the small fountain and it saw a 1/2 inch high. It would be nice if you had small plastic cups for the water. Even fast food restaurants have baby cups for water.
