20 Minutes Could Save You 20% or More on Your Health Care Bill

Do you have time to read a book? Or, maybe, listen to a book? There is one writer who is making a very influential argument regarding healthy eating. And, no, it's not Snack-Girl.

Pollan

Michael Pollan is writing best sellers about how we eat in the United States. If you haven't heard of him, that's okay. He is mostly known to this country's intelligentsia. But, his books are really good and they have changed the way millions of people view food.

He has written 3 books arguing that the food we eat is making both the environment and ourselves sick. Obviously, the USA has a problem if 67% of our inhabitants is either overweight or obese.

Amazing, no? That means, on average, 7 out of 10 people you see driving a car (or shopping at the mall) has a weight problem.

You can find his books at the library, on CD, and in bookstores. Which one you choose depends on how much time you have to learn about the food manufacturing business. This is how long each book took me to read:

  • The Omnivore's Dilemma - 20 hours
  • In Defense of Food - 3 hours
  • Food Rules - 20 minutes

I recommend "The Omnivore's Dilemma" because it goes into great detail about how a meal at McDonald's is made. Have you asked yourself why a McDonald's Cheeseburger is so cheap? A mere 99 cents gets you a bun, cheese, and a burger. The answer is....I don't want to be a spoiler!

"Food Rules" is really a pamphlet version of his longer books. It is a compilation of conclusions from his former detailed analysis of the food industry. If you only have 20 minutes - this is your book.

If you care about healthy eating, find the time to at least sample one of these books. They have changed many peoples lives, including mine.

Pollan woke me up and I began to pay attention to what I was eating. Now, I believe, I am much healthier (last check-up went great!).

Have you read Pollan - what do you think of his books? Any other books you would suggest? Please share below.

that's it! after weeks of procrastinating, i'm buying the books today. thanks for the nudge :) .... and by the way, great title for the blog post!

Read 'em all. My preference is In Defense of Food. Mr. Pollan was instrumental in two ways for me:

1. I changed my diet/lifestyle

2. I got so angry about the American food system that I wrote a book to assist people with changing their lifestyle...lose weight and be healthier

Once you "get it", it is incredibly simple.

I need to read his books. I've read excerpts, but just haven't purchased the books yet. I do like your title, and I think you could save 25-30% if you read these books while on your stationary bike (where I do most of my reading!)

I can not tell you how passionate I am on this subject. Being the middle sister between two brothers with cancer (both of which are under the age of 37) I find their tragedies to be much more related to their eating and activity lifestyles than to coincidence. If you can't get a hold of the books, remember to go back to the basics in your diet. Eat like you grew the food yourself. If you don't have the ingredients to add at home, then don't buy it in the store. The additives, preservatives, hormones, antibiotics, etc. Are never what our maker intended for us to eat.

These are the best books I've read in a while. Could hardly put them down.

I'm a big fan of Pollan! But I have not read all of his books. I like the idea of an audio book; it would be nice to be able to "read" while I walk to work each morning (it takes nearly an hour to walk there, so I could get quite a bit of reading done!).

The Omnivore's Dilemma was an amazing book that really helped me crystallize me relationship with food. Before I read it was sort of unwillingly to commit - trying one health craze after another. Afterward I really focused on good healthy food grown naturally as close to home as I could get.

Love your blog, especially the recipes!

I haven't read Food Rules, but I've all the others. He's a great writer and highly motivated me to change to clean eating. I also suggest Marion Nestle's "What To Eat" and if you're interested "Food Politics."
