Take Your Apple and Peanut Butter To A Whole New Level

Peanut Butter Yogurt Fruit Dip

Snack Girl has long advocated for an apple and peanut butter for a perfect snack. Basically, you got your fruit with a another whole food (peanuts) just blended up. Super yum!

Sadly, this snack can get a bit dull. Even Snack Girl herself gets a bit sick of apples and peanut butter.

What would happen if you added yogurt to your peanut butter? Or more exactly, peanut butter to yogurt? Would the awesomeness just blow your mind?

I have got to tell you that I added a mere teaspoon of all natural peanut butter to 2 ounces of Vanilla Greek Non-fat yogurt and my mind was blown. Actually, it was the tablespoon of PB2 added to the yogurt that was other worldly.

PB2 is powdered peanut butter and has a fraction of the calories of regular peanut butter - see here: Peanut Butter Lovers: A 45 Calorie Solution That Will Save Your Waistline . You get the peanut butter flavor without the calories - and I actually liked it BETTER than the addition of regular old peanut butter.

I found a Dannon Oikos non-fat vanilla greek yogurt in the yogurt section. Chobani also has a vanilla option — but FAGE did not. That's okay because I can't afford FAGE anyway :)

You take about half of the yogurt out into a bowl, mix it with your choice of peanut butter, and spread it on your apple. My kids, of course, prefer to dip.

The vanilla and peanut butter combo is creamy, nutty, and just great with the CRUNCH of a fresh apple. Wow!

Another option for a yogurt fruit dip is to just add honey to plain greek yogurt. Taste it until you get the right sweetness and you will love how it tastes on apples, strawberries, pineapple, etc.

For those on Weight Watchers, if you can just divide this in 1/2 (2.5 Points+) - you will still have a satisfying snack.

Yogurt Fruit Dip Recipe

(serves one)

2 ounces of vanilla greek nonfat yogurt
1 teaspoon peanut butter or 1 tablespoon PB2
1 apple

Mix yogurt with peanut butter and spread on apple or use as a dip. Enjoy!

With peanut butter and apple: 171 calories, 3.0 g fat, 33.4 g carbohydrates, 6.3 g protein, 4.7 g fiber, 43 mg sodium, 5 Points+

With PB2 and apple: 167 calories, 1.2 g fat, 34.0 carbohydrates, 7.8 g protein, 4.6 g fiber, 57 mg sodium, 4 Points+

Making your own yogurt is super easy and cheap! Scald milk, let cool until you can hold your little finger in the milk comfortably for 10 seconds, then add a tablespoon or 2 of store bought plain yogurt. Put all of this in a pre-warmed Thermos and set that in a room temp., dark place (pantry, cabinet, etc) for 12-16 hours. Using Greek yogurt will make yours a bit thicker, and after the first time you can save a bit of homemade to start the next batch. With each new batch the yogurt gets better.

Flavored yogurts have a candy bar worth of sugar...you do not note the sugar grams in your post? Like the idea of PB2.

I have been using the pb2 vanilla yougurt combo a few years myself andit is pretty good! I also combine the pb2 with a little pumpkin or mashed banana for variety

Yum-can't wait to try this since I have a jar of pb2 in my pantry that I haven't tried yet! I just suck up the price of Fage because of the sugar content or lack there of :)

I eat pb2 with an apple everyday. I also mix pb2 into nf greek yogurt. Since pb2 is 2 tbsp=1pp, apples are zero pp, how do you get 4pp for this snack?

I absolutely LOVE PB2 in plain Greek yogurt. It's soooo good! I like to top it with a sliced banana and a tbsp or so of dry roasted peanuts.

I was also wondering why this snack would be 4pp? 1Tbls. of PB2 is only half a point and I can have an entire 5oz. cup of Chobani non fat plain yogurt for 2 points. The most I could figure would be 3pp.

I find that the chocolate version of PB2 has a richer peanut butter flavor; it is a staple in my cupboard!

@ Debbie -- I respectfully submit that your comment about the sugar in flavored yogurts being equal to a candy bar is completely inaccurate. Part of the sugar count on the package is the "sugar", actually lactose, that naturally occurs in the milk which is the basic ingredient in any yogurt, greek or otherwise.
I had a couple different brands of plain greek yogurt in my fridge and the sugar level varied from a low of 4 grams to a high of 8 grams. I happened to have the vanilla greek yogurt that Lisa referred to in her post and it lists sugar at 18. Being generous to your argument, I subtracted 4 (the naturally occurring sugar) from 18 and got 14. In my experience, most candy bars hover around 25 grams of sugar PER SERVING on average. (I checked on the clearance Valentine's chocolate I had bought to send to my son and his friends at college.) Just going on a per serving basis the amount of added sugar is just a smidgeon over half over the candy bar. Add in the fact that a lot of candy bars are actually 2 or more servings, and your guilt inducing argument doesn't even begin to hold water.

I use the nonfat vanilla yogurt with honey and cinnamon. I serve it with fruit and have had great comments.

I don't buy flavored yogurt because of the added sugar, but I do this with plain Greek yogurt, natural PB, and a bit of honey to sweeten. I actually eat it by itself with a spoon. Tastes like the inside of a PB pie! :)

I found Pb2 plain and chocolate flavor at my Target. I was so excited to see it there. I always have had to order it on line and I hate having to pay extra for shipping.
