Pizza Without Guilt

Snack Girl doesn’t believe in guilt about food. For me, there is no “good” food vs. “evil” food.

Light Pizza Recipe

There are just treats and healthy choices. Pizza is one of those foods that could fall in either category BUT most of the time is a treat.

Why? Well, crazy pizzerias put a POUND of cheese on a pizza. Argh! Or they add chicken, bacon, and ranch dressing. Double argh!

The thing is pizza is one of my favorite foods. I was driving by a small country store with this sign out front and I had to laugh.

Ha! Those (in that order) are my favorite treats! Preferably, I will have pizza and beer followed by ice cream :)

You can make your own version of healthy pizza if you have a toaster oven or a broiler. Of course, you can also make your own crust, etc., but for now you need:

  • whole wheat English muffins
  • pizza sauce
  • shredded mozzarella cheese

You can find 100% whole wheat english muffins in the grocery store. Thomas's puts out a pretty gone one.

The pizza sauce can be any tomato based sauce, but it should NOT include cheese. Check the label - so many pasta sauces on the market now include a form of cheese. The problem, again, is the added calories, which almost none of us need.

Split the muffin, spread some sauce, and use 1/8 cup of cheese (that is one-half of 1/4 cup) and you got a 125 calorie snack. Put it in a toaster-oven or under the broiler for a few minutes and you are done. (Do not use the microwave - it will turn out yucky).

And now you have a chance to add some sliced peppers or other fruit or vegetable to make it even more healthy.

Finally, kids love this for an after-school snack. They can make it themselves, which is always a bonus.

For 1/2 ounce fresh mozzarella, 1/2 English muffin, and 2 tablespoons pizza sauce:

125 calories, 3.5 g fat, 16.6 g carbohydrates, 6.7 g protein, 1.5 g fiber, 311 mg sodium, 3 Points+

I love these kind of pizza's there so easy and delicious! Have a great weekend!!

I used to make these as a kid for lunch (with about 10 times the cheese) and they were awesome. If you don't have any sauce on hand I use this quick recipe

http://allrecipes.com/recipe/easy-pizza-sauce-iii/

I sometimes add a little water to thin it some. I love it because there's no sugar.

This is a fantastic idea!! Thanks!!

I really want to try these, but I live in a rural area, and none of our stores--not even Wal-Mart--carries whole wheat English muffins! Once again, another great idea, though!

That ruins everything that is good about pizza. :(

I live in a rural area too... thats why,

when I get to the cities I buy extra things like

wheat muffins and freeze them for a treat later.

Making them extra special! I will definitely try these....snack girl you are awesome!

I made these once for my daughter using Portuguese Muffins (NOT Portuguese rolls, these are like English muffins, but better). They were pretty dang good. She loves the muffins for breakfast so we always have them around. They made a very easy and fast dinner on one of those "oh crap! I forgot to defrost something" nights.

My mother used to make these all the time when I was a kid with regular english muffins. Only she toasted them, then put olive oil on the muffin before the sauce because she said it kept the muffin from getting soggy. I still make them this way but with the whole wheat muffins. I also saute onions and put them on the ones I eat then top with some Parmesan cheese. Both may add calories but it certainly makes me happy.

My mom used hamburger buns for this when I was little. Called them pizzaburgers. Maybe the people in the rural areas would have an easier time finding whole grain/wheat hamburger buns?

I'd worry more about the sauce containing loads of sugar or, worse, high fructose corn syrup, than cheese. Cheese itself isn't particularly bad for you.

As an alternative to whole-wheat english muffins, whole-wheat pitas make great toaster-oven pizza and may be easier to find in some areas.

I grew up eating a similar version - but with a whole wheat pita pocket and on a skillet over the stove. Delicious and a good solution for anyone who can't get their hands on english muffins.

I like making pizzas out of portabella mushroom caps.

Man, I lived on those back in middle school. I'll have to make some again, sometime soon.

Great one. Its sounding delicious too.

Whether pizza is healthy or not is really determined by the quality of ingredients used and the choice of cheese – full fat or skim milk. Most pizzas are high in saturated fat, salt and calories.

Garlic powder might be used in the crust or anchovies might be a topping. Special selections such as this make for special pizza.

This is delicious! It's a perfect snack and completely satisfies my pizza craving.

Takes me back to my childhood!! I also make these with my 2 little girls and they love them just as much as I do! My local Winco makes sells fresh pizza sauce! None of the bad stuff inside :-) I use it when I don't have time to make sauce! Yummy stuff!

I didn't have all the things for this snack. I used 100cal Arnold sandwich thin and sliced tomatoes with a few leaves of basil. Topped with mozzarella acourse. Thanks for the idea!

This too takes me back to my childhood. We often enjoyed these as an after school snack or casual supper. They're much more wholesome than other versions of pizza. I just made a fancier version recently that was inspired by Hungry Girl with ham, pineapple and red onion. With a tossed salad, it was a light yet nourishing lunch.
