The Deception of Honey Maid Grahamfuls

August 14, 2012   20 Comments

A new snack has arrived from Nabisco, Honey Maid grahamfuls. They are in a blue box that features fluffy clouds and grass.

Honey Maid Grahamfuls Nutritional Facts

The claims on the box include:

  • 100% Whole Grain
  • No High Fructose Corn Syrup
  • No Artificial Flavors
  • Good Source of Calcium

When I received these from Nabisco, I said to my husband, “Hey, these look pretty good.” and he said, “Look at the sugar content.”

hmmm. It has 8 grams of sugar which I didn’t think was that bad until I looked at the SIZE of the cookie. Here is another shot:

There is 8 grams of sugar in just 25 grams of cookie. That means that 30% of this cookie is sugar. The photo above is of 8 grams a sugar next to the cookie - does it look like a third to you?

Do you think that all those other claims trump the amount of sugar in this cookie? These are not your mother’s graham crackers.

For comparison, take a look at the Uncrustable that I reviewed last week and got flamed for liking. It has 6 grams of sugar in 58 grams of sandwich - that is 10% sugar. An medium apple has about 19 grams of sugar in 182 grams - 10% sugar.

Enough math!

The idea here is not only do you have to look at the sugar grams - but you need to look at how large the product is to determine if it is a healthy amount.

All you have to do is taste one of these to KNOW it is not a healthy snack and is a cookie. They are super sweet and remind me of Oreos (41% sugar).

Do not allow products to trick you with their “Whole Grain” promise. These grahamfuls only have 1 gram of fiber per serving and they are a TREAT.

The nutrition facts for one “filled cracker” is:
110 calories, 4 g fat, 18 g carbohydrates, 8 g sugar, 1 g protein, 1 g fiber, 95 mg sodium, 3 Points+

What do you think of Honey Maid grahamfuls?

This product was received for review consideration. No other compensation was provided.

Have to admit I was sucked in by these. My kids love them (no wonder!) and I thought they were pretty good too. Not going to get these anymore. Probably would be better off using my own regular graham crackers and peanut better. Thanks for the wakeup call!

Wow!!! I'll be staying away from these cookies! Thanks for the info.

I have a slightly different opinion than the other two comments - as you said, it is a TREAT. Ice cream also has high sugar content. So does milk chocolate. If it is the treat I choose to have that day, I don't think there is anything wrong with that. The important thing is that you know what you are eating and that you are making a treat choice as opposed to a healthy snack.

I really like graham crackers and animal crackers (not animal cookies) but I found I had to look at the ingredient label on them- anytime I am going to buy something new in that line.

I get snack girls emails the same time I get hungry girl's emails. I just read a recipe from hungry girl where she uses graham crackers mixed with crushed fiber one cereal to make a faux graham cracker pie crust. When making a healthier version of a decadent dessert, these would probably work well.

Even if it's only supposed to be a "treat", that's not the point. It's irresponsible of Nabisco. Americans get too many "treats." I make desserts, snacks, etc. from scratch and I always use LESS THAN HALF of the amount of sugar/sweetener called for in the recipe. And yet it's always sweet enough. We need to learn to fix our palates, and these kinds of "treats" aren't helping.

the uncrustables had HFCS and transfats, which was the big issue for me. I generally don't buy packaged cookies but my husband does. I annoy him by reading the labels but he eats better now.

Wow! It's unfortunate that the food labeling requirements are lax enough that cookies like this can be labeled with so many "healthy" claims. Many people will see the "100% whole grain", and "No high fructose corn syrup", assume it's a healthy snack and not even check the nutrition facts.

Thanks for the review! I bought the peanut butter kind yesterday and it had 2 grams of fiber with 5 grams of sugar. It was also 120 calories. I know it doesn't make much of a difference for a cookie, but next time I'll stick with my usual graham and pb

Oh well, I guess they were a waste of money.. Pretty tasty a least for a treat

most all cookies are enriched wheat flour. I was happy to find Trader Joe's has a great cinnamon graham cracker with whole wheat being the first ingredient. But do not remember the sugar content. what do ya'll think of these??

Thanks for the info and heads up. However, I think apples and their sugar content should never be compared to processed sugar. It's a whole different ball game of sugar... Sugar in fruit has fiber and nutrients and is absorbed quite differently.

last week I made a pumpkin bundt for my daughter's birthday [her request]; I reduced the sugar from 2 cups to 1/2 c and no one noticed! Of course it was served in a puddle of warm bourbon-laced choc pudding, another 1/2 c sugar for 10 servings! That's what I call a treat! I received tons of yummy comments and she took all leftover cake home. Our treats are Infrequent and not overly sweet; unless homemade we have no treats. I keep raw cookie dough in a freezer bags for ingredient/ portion control and convenience. I always loved grahams but in recent years noticed their flavor was lacking, for my tastebuds anyway. I'd like to try homemade ones some day. :)

Thanks for sharing! Went and looked at the store brand honey grahams we have and 2 full cracker sheets have a total of 8g of sugars, not just one, small cracker. Definitely sticking with what I got now!

How funny you should be reviewing these @SnackGirl! I looked longingly at the display of these as I stood in line at my local supermarket just the other day. I was tempted to go and get a box, but I thought about what you would say about them because they had the look of a 'cookie wrapped in health food clothing'. I'm especially glad I didn't give in to temptation after reading your review. Hooray for SnackGirl!!! You saved me and didn't even know it!!

Talk about an eye opener!

I bought these shortly before you posted this and was surprised to see your disdain for them, despite my habit of checking labels. As I was entering it in my Food Diary, I noticed that the label states it has 5g of sugar per pack, not the 8g you mention above (20% of the size of the cookie instead of 30%). I don't know if 3g makes a huge difference, but it seems significant to me. 5g of sugar for a tasty "treat" doesn't seem like too poor of an option considering it also comes with 2g of fiber and 3g of protein. And while the ingredients list isn't particularly short or clean, the first 3-4 ingredients seem ok.

I just bought these graham snacks, and was buying them as a treat. I read the label, and for a conveniently pre-packaged treat, I think they are fine. I got the peanut butter ones, which only have 5g of fat per package, not the 8 you listed. Not sure where the discrepancy came from. Anyway, I knew what I was getting when I bought them, but still felt that for a treat/snack for on-the-go, they aren't a bad choice. I use them because they are easier/neater for purse than the ones I make to eat at home with my own PB, etc. Thanks for the "heads-up".

Ouch!! Love them though. Guess they are off the list!

I really like them. As someone who is on Weight Watchers, they are only 3 points plus value. When I have a sugar craving, they are still considerably better than what most people pick for a treat. I don't see anything wrong with them.
