The secret to eating lots and not getting fat

How much can you eat before you start gaining weight? Obviously, this depends on what you eat. It would be difficult to find a food that has less calories and tastes as delicious as a fresh cantaloupe.

Cantaloupe

You can eat 6 cups of cantaloupe before you approach the calories in one Small Hamburger or 4 cups instead of one Snickers. You just can't go wrong eating cantaloupe.

How do you tell if a cantaloupe is ripe? Some people believe you can sniff the bottom of the cantaloupe to check if it is ripe. If it smells good, then you should be fine.

But, this has failed for many. It can be almost impossible to tell the ripeness of a cantaloupe from the outside before cutting open. This is very frustrating because an unripe cantaloupe just tastes like styrofoam.

The measure of ripeness is how easily it falls of the vine and since most of us don't have cantaloupe vines we can't tell if it is ripe. Don't feel bad if you cut it open and it isn't ripe.

Cantaloupe is a good fruit to buy every week because because you can store it for a long period of time before cutting open (on your counter top) and after cutting open in the refrigerator. When you are buying a packaged fruit salad, you will almost always see it included because it keeps so well.

Try the recipe below for an excellent starter for a meal. The combination of the sweet cantaloupe and the salty prosciutto is truly divine. Prosciutto is a form of cured meat that hails from Italy.

Cantaloupe and Prosciutto

1 cantaloupe
4 oz prosciutto
Cut cantaloupe in half, scoop out seeds, and remove rind. Cut into wedges and wrap prosciutto around the wedge. Insert toothpick to hold together or just eat!

A few years back there was a news cast from our local farmers market in the interview one of the farmers said to look at the "webbing" on the cantaloupe the tighter the webbing the more vine ripened and more flavorful the melon would be. I have since had nothing but good cantaloupe!

Two ways to check for ripeness, first push with your thumb on the blossom end, if it gives a little it is ripe. Also, hold it up to your ear and give it a knock, if it sounds hallow it is ripe
