These 25 ideas for healthy after-school snacks will stop you from scratching your head when your kids run in the door.

Healthy After School Snacks

If you don't have kids and work outside the home check out my list of Best Healthy Office Snacks.

I love this list of snacks because all of us have most of the ingredients in our pantry (or we can get them easily). Also, a teenager can easily make themselves any of the snacks on the easy list and the more complicated snacks with recipes (below the obvious list).

The perfect snack is a combination of fruit or vegetable and protein around 150 calories. Not all of these are perfect like apples and peanut butter but they come pretty close.

Obviously, we don't want our kids grabbing chips, soda, or candy as a snack every day. That is what they are going to ask for but we have to be creative and give them something they will like as much as junk food. This is a super tall order because it means that someone is going to have to prepare something as opposed to opening a bag.

I get how opening a bag is easier than spreading peanut butter on an apple especially when you are hungry and tired. But you can do it!

Healthy after-school snacks are completely achievable once you get into the habit of not eating crap.

My kids are always changing what they want after school. My son recently asked me for ramen noodles (not healthy) but I am trying to figure out a way to make them into a healthy snack. Add an egg and some broccoli? Why not? Add only half the sodium? It could work!

The most important factor is not giving up because if your children are anything like mine, they constantly demand fast food, chips, cookies, and ice cream. Do I give them these things? Of course! But not every day and not after school.

Good luck with this list of snacks and tell me how it goes!

What a great list! I have 3 kids who are always STARVING when they get home. I'm going to print this list out and tell them to pick the ones they think they'll like the most and that will be their snack choices. Thanks for the idea!

Great snack ideas. I have incorporated many into my 93 lbs weight loss. An even better benefit of my weight loss is how it has transformed how my daughter eats. By learning this early she will hopefully have fewer weight issues than her dad has had!

I love it!!!!!!!!!!

thank you so much for the ideas. thanks also for all your work on the weight watchers pointsplus you figured out as i have just started the plan.

I love your posts, I have the same appetite and from a young age ive loved food and had a fast motabalsim but as im now 18 i know it'll slow down sooner or later, but my appetite hasnt !! so Im looking into healthy food and cooking everything from scratch, I take my own lunches to work ect but snacks was the bit i stumbled on.

Thankyou !!

Thanks for the ideas. Great, guilt-free snacks

The kids that I babysit love eating Yocrunch yogurt and the parents totally approve. The kids love that they get to choose what flavor and love the greek yogurt, which helps to provide them with extra protein

Looking for more healthy after school snacks

I make a WW friendly "ice cream" sandwich using 2 graham cracker squares, a couple of tablespoons of fat free redi whip and then I add a couple of thin slices of banana. I wrap them up and freeze them and then can grab them whenever I want a quick snack. Super yummy.

Donna E, great idea with the graham cracker sandwich. I'm on it!

Wow! You just us 37 healthy snack ideas for anyone who is hungry! I’d like to add one more. Open face peanut butter sandwich topped with fruit

I recently discovered that you can pop your own microwave popcorn without any oil. You use a microwave safe glass bowl that that you can fully cover with a plate. Toss in 1/4 to 1/2 cup plain kernels, no butter or oil needed. Microwave on high for 5-7 minutes, or until the popping slows just the way you do with store-bought bags. Viola! Complely plain popcorn. Careful, the bowl will be hot, and it will steam when you remove the lid. (Do that fast so it won't get soggy) I like to spray mine with olive oil and sprinkle with pink Himalayan salt. No funky tasting chemicals needed!

Ooo frozen not thawed peas.. why not thawed?

Thanks for this list and the recipes. Good for people of all ages!! 2 more thoughts: Snack Girl’s baked oatmeal is great even cold in the afternoon. And, nut butter and sprouts are great between rice crackers as is melted cheese plus sprouts. Thank you for reminding us that afternoon snacks can be real food!!!
